I begrudgingly visited several years ago, having been dragged in by some friends. It’s disappointing (but not surprising) to read that it’s not improved at all in that time. I seem to recall that there were very few examples of queer sex and, as you say, absolutely no context provided to any of the exhibits. It’s a real shame because I think a good museum of sex is needed, especially in Amsterdam!

I hear you! I wrote a whole section, which I ended up deleting, about the lack of queer representation. They basically had a corner under the stairs for it. So underwhelming! I also really questioned their judgement because there were a couple of exhibits that screamed sexual violence as a form of colonial oppression.

Oh and I totally agree, we need something better. Someone replied to this piece and said I should go to the one in New York... but I'm not sure if I can deal with another disappointing trip!

Is the one in New York run by the same people? If so definitely not worth it!

I don't think so! I know the Kinsey institute are involved in some way.
